Chess Tactics Puzzles: what to know before playing

Try Chess Tactics Puzzles at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

Give this approach a try

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Input guidance

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Check the stated objective.

Notice this detail

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
