Word Deduction: how a round works

Open Word Deduction, check the instructions and begin a round. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Look at what changes after your first action. Check the rule that explains your first action. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Bring this focus to a round

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Make the next step deliberately.

The purpose of your moves

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

The order of play

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Input guidance

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

Work through an example

With APPLE as the answer and ALLEE as the guess, the first A and final E are in the right places. The extra L and E are not both counted as present. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Consider the next action carefully.

A common point of confusion

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
